While the US is not among the largest investors in Vietnam, American companies have driven new foreign investment flows into the country, particularly as they diversify their supply chains and relocate the manufacturing operations of their suppliers to Vietnam.

Despite the challenges that lie ahead, the future of US investment in Vietnam looks promising, underpinned by Vietnam’s impressive economic growth and its strong political commitment to fostering its partnership with the US.

 

As Vietnam’s economy matured and its policy environment became increasingly conducive to foreign investment, US investments diversified into a wider array of industries. The early 2000s saw a significant influx of US capital into sectors such as technology, energy, healthcare, and finance. High-profile companies like Intel, General Electric, and Citibank made substantial commitments to the Vietnamese market, each bringing expertise, technology, and global best practices.

The tech sector has been a standout success story. Intel’s $1 billion investment in its Ho Chi Minh City facility in 2006 underscored the potential of Vietnam as a hub for high-tech manufacturing. Similarly, collaborations in renewables have showcased Vietnam’s commitment to sustainability, with US firms taking the lead in providing cutting-edge solutions.

US investments have brought benefits beyond normal economic values. Although the US ranks 11^th among investors in Vietnam, US companies are key drivers of foreign investments into the country over the past years. Specifically, the diversification of supply chains by major US global brands has brought fresh investments into Vietnam’s export-oriented manufacturing hubs.

Beyond direct capital inflows, these companies have introduced advanced technologies, enhanced workforce skills, and fostered innovation. The involvement of US firms has elevated Vietnam’s position in global value chains, particularly in manufacturing, technology, and agricultural exports.

Moreover, besides investment activities, US companies have actively participated in community support and social activities, creating a ripple effect on Vietnam’s development. They have contributed to protecting the environment, improved public health, and advanced training and educational opportunities, aligning with Vietnam’s long-term development goals.

While the progress has been significant, US investments in Vietnam have not been without challenges. Regulatory complexities, inconsistent enforcement of policies, and limitations in infrastructure have occasionally posed hurdles for foreign investors, including those from the US. Furthermore, navigating cultural and operational differences requires ongoing adaptation.

The future of American investment in Vietnam appears promising. Several factors that contribute to this optimism include the Vietnam’s impressive economic growth and stability, strong commitments to digital transformation and commitments in green growth, and political will to strengthen the bilateral economic ties between the two countries.

To capitalise on these opportunities, both governments and the US business community must work collaboratively. Continued dialogue on trade and investment policies, improvements in transparency, and alignment with global standards will further enhance the investment climate. Educational and cultural exchanges can also deepen mutual understanding and create stronger bonds between the two nations.

The journey of 30 years of US investment in Vietnam is a testament to the transformative power of economic collaboration. From its modest beginnings to its current diverse portfolio, US investment has contributed significantly to Vietnam’s development while creating value for American businesses. The prospects for the future are even more exciting, with opportunities for growth in digital innovation, green energy, and strengthened economic ties.

Calitoday (06/5/2025): Với nguồn nhân lực công nghệ dồi dào và sự hậu thuẫn chiến lược từ nhà nước, Việt Nam đang vươn mình trở thành một nguồn lực đáng chú ý trên bản đồ công nghệ chip toàn cầu.

Sở hữu lợi thế với hơn một triệu kỹ sư CNTT trẻ, trong đó một nửa là các lập trình viên tài năng, Việt Nam đang đứng trước cơ hội vàng. Việc tập trung nguồn lực trí tuệ này vào ngành công nghiệp bán dẫn và trí tuệ nhân tạo (AI) không chỉ giúp quốc gia đáp ứng nhu cầu trong nước mà còn mở ra tiềm năng trở thành nhà cung cấp chủ chốt cho thị trường toàn cầu.

Hành trình của Việt Nam trong lĩnh vực bán dẫn đã bắt đầu từ năm 1979, dù không ít gian nan. Giờ đây, lịch sử dường như đang lặp lại, mở ra một kỷ nguyên sáng tạo mới. Đây là cơ hội hiếm có để Việt Nam vươn lên thành trung tâm sản xuất bán dẫn toàn cầu, một giấc mơ ấp ủ của nhiều thế hệ người Việt.

Năm 2024, bộ phim tài liệu hợp tác giữa FPT và Discovery đã khắc họa rõ nét cuộc cách mạng số của Việt Nam. Tác phẩm này đã ghi lại sự trỗi dậy mạnh mẽ của đất nước từ một cái tên mờ nhạt trên bản đồ công nghệ thế giới để trở thành một trong những nền kinh tế số hàng đầu châu Á. Bộ phim dài 20 phút đã phác thảo quá trình chuyển đổi ấn tượng của Việt Nam thành một cường quốc công nghệ, sẵn sàng dẫn đầu cuộc cách mạng công nghệ tiếp theo và trở thành trung tâm tài nguyên toàn cầu.

Chủ tịch FPT Trương Gia Bình tự hào chia sẻ: "FPT cùng các doanh nghiệp CNTT khác đã trở thành đàn chim Việt Nam bay khắp thế giới, khẳng định vị thế của quốc gia trên bản đồ số toàn cầu". Ông nhấn mạnh: "Chúng ta đã tạo nên đàn chim Việt Nam bay khắp thế giới". Bộ phim tài liệu gồm ba phần, đi sâu vào quá trình phát triển của nền kinh tế số Việt Nam, trong đó FPT đóng vai trò là lực lượng tiên phong trong lĩnh vực CNTT.

Chủ tịch FPT Trương Gia Bình: “Chúng tôi đã hình thành một đàn chim Việt Nam bay khắp thế giới”

Hơn hai thập kỷ trước, ít ai dám tin rằng Việt Nam có thể phát triển phần mềm cho thế giới. Thế nhưng, bằng sự kiên trì và tầm nhìn chiến lược, FPT và các công ty trong ngành đã chứng minh điều ngược lại. Ngày nay, đội ngũ một triệu kỹ sư CNTT của Việt Nam là một lực lượng hùng hậu, có khả năng đưa đất nước trở thành quốc gia dẫn đầu về cả bán dẫn và AI.

Vào tháng 11 năm 2022, FPT Semiconductor, một công ty con của FPT Software, đã giới thiệu con chip đầu tiên được thiết kế cho các ứng dụng Internet vạn vật (IoT). Thiết kế này được hoàn thiện tại Việt Nam và quá trình sản xuất, đóng gói được thực hiện tại một cơ sở ở Hàn Quốc.

Theo Tổng giám đốc Nguyễn Vinh Quang, sự ra đời của FPT Semiconductor đã hiện thực hóa ước mơ của nhiều thế hệ người Việt. Ông chia sẻ: “Ít ai biết rằng vào năm 1979, chúng ta đã có nhà máy bán dẫn Z181, cung cấp chip cho thị trường Đông Âu. Với phương châm ‘Sản xuất tại Việt Nam, Sản xuất bởi FPT’, chúng tôi đặt mục tiêu thiết kế và thương mại hóa chip cho các thị trường lớn như Nhật Bản, Hàn Quốc, Đài Loan, Hoa Kỳ, Châu Âu, Trung Quốc và nhiều quốc gia khác. Chúng tôi mong muốn hồi sinh và hoàn thành giấc mơ của những người đi trước”.

Hiện nay, FPT và Viettel là hai doanh nghiệp lớn của Việt Nam đang hoạt động tích cực trong lĩnh vực thiết kế IC. Trong khi Viettel tập trung vào công nghệ 5G, FPT lại có thế mạnh về PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) - mạch tích hợp quản lý năng lượng.

FPT lựa chọn PMIC bởi đây là một thành phần thiết yếu trong mọi thiết bị điện tử. Những con chip này, với vai trò phân phối năng lượng tương tự như trái tim bơm máu trong cơ thể, tạo nên một thị trường trị giá ước tính 1,3 nghìn tỷ đô la. Trong bối cảnh chuỗi cung ứng toàn cầu đang có xu hướng dịch chuyển khỏi sự phụ thuộc quá lớn vào Trung Quốc, Việt Nam đang có một vị thế thuận lợi để trở thành điểm đến hấp dẫn cho ngành sản xuất thiết bị điện tử.

Viettel cũng không ngừng có những bước tiến đáng kể trong lĩnh vực thiết kế chip. Gần đây, công ty đã công bố phát triển thành công chip DFE 5G phức tạp nhất khu vực Đông Nam Á. Con chip này có khả năng xử lý một nghìn tỷ phép tính mỗi giây và đóng vai trò là thành phần cốt lõi trong các trạm gốc 5G trên toàn thế giới.

Thiếu tướng Nguyễn Đình Chiến, Phó Tổng giám đốc Tập đoàn Viettel, nhấn mạnh rằng con đường phát triển chất bán dẫn còn dài và đòi hỏi sự phát triển vững chắc cả về nghiên cứu và ứng dụng thương mại. Ông khẳng định: “Chúng ta phải tạo ra những con chip đáp ứng nhu cầu của doanh nghiệp trong nước và an ninh quốc gia. Điều này sẽ tạo nền tảng vững chắc cho các công nghệ tiên tiến trong tương lai và mở rộng ra thị trường toàn cầu”.

Một khoảnh khắc quan trọng trong lịch sử

Chip DFE 5G của Viettel hiện là chip tiên tiến nhất khu vực Đông Nam Á.

Phát biểu tại Hội nghị AI và Bán dẫn Việt Nam (AISC VIETNAM 2025), Chủ tịch FPT Trương Gia Bình khẳng định Việt Nam là một điểm đến công nghệ toàn cầu đầy tiềm năng, đặc biệt trong lĩnh vực AI và bán dẫn. Ông dẫn chứng những chia sẻ từ các nhà lãnh đạo công nghệ hàng đầu thế giới, như Tổng giám đốc điều hành NVIDIA Jensen Huang, người đã bày tỏ sự kinh ngạc trước những tiến bộ vượt bậc của Việt Nam.

Ông Bình nhấn mạnh: “Việt Nam không chỉ là một đất nước xinh đẹp mà còn là một không gian rộng lớn, chưa được khai phá hết tiềm năng cho sự hợp tác toàn cầu trong lĩnh vực AI và chất bán dẫn”.

Ông Nguyễn Khắc Lịch, Vụ trưởng Vụ Công nghiệp CNTT (Bộ Thông tin và Truyền thông), xác nhận rằng Thủ tướng Chính phủ đã ký Chiến lược quốc gia phát triển chất bán dẫn đến năm 2030, với tầm nhìn đến năm 2050. Đây là lộ trình dài hạn đầu tiên của Việt Nam cho lĩnh vực đầy hứa hẹn này.

Ông Lịch nhấn mạnh tầm quan trọng của việc làm chủ công tác R&D trong lĩnh vực chất bán dẫn và điện tử nếu Việt Nam muốn tiến xa hơn vai trò của một quốc gia chỉ thực hiện công việc lắp ráp.
