CaliToday (10/12/2025): Facing the relentless pressure of the Russian invasion and the complexities of new American diplomatic initiatives, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has identified the four most explosive issues in the ongoing peace negotiations.
KYIV — As diplomatic cables fly between Kyiv and Washington, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has publicly outlined the core obstacles preventing a ceasefire. Speaking to reporters, the President made it clear that while Ukraine is open to dialogue, it will not capitulate to the "evil" of Russian aggression on four critical fronts.
According to RBC-Ukraine, Zelenskyy emphasized that these points are not just political bargaining chips—they are existential matters for the survival of the state.
The Four Pillars of Sensitivity
Zelenskyy listed the four areas where the gap between the aggressor’s demands and Ukraine’s sovereignty is widest:
Donbas: The fate of the industrial east, currently a meat-grinder of trench warfare.
Financial Reparations ("Money"): Who pays for the catastrophic destruction of Ukraine’s infrastructure?
Security Guarantees: Concrete assurances that prevent Russia from re-arming and attacking again in five years.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP): The safety and control of Europe’s largest nuclear facility.
The Nuclear Standoff: ZNPP
Zelenskyy highlighted the absurdity of the current situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Occupied by Russian troops since the early days of the war, the plant has become a tool of nuclear blackmail.
However, the President noted a technical reality that weakens Russia's hand:
"The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, even while occupied, cannot function normally without Ukraine. Everyone understands this."
Without integration into the Ukrainian power grid and technical oversight from Kyiv, the plant is a dormant giant—a liability rather than an asset for the occupiers.
The Territorial Puzzle: No Simple "Line on a Map"
The most heated debate concerns territory. While rumors swirl about potential "land swaps," Zelenskyy signaled that such a simplistic approach is dangerous and logistically flawed.
He pointed to the "gray zones" and small pockets of occupation in regions like Kharkiv and Sumy, where the frontline is not a clean line.
"There are territories that the Russians simply cannot hold," Zelenskyy explained. "There are small populated areas in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions... If we stop simply at the current 'contact line,' what happens to these territories? What happens to our people there?"
Zelenskyy argues that freezing the conflict along the current line would leave thousands of Ukrainians trapped in isolated pockets of occupation, effectively abandoning them a moral compromise Kyiv is unwilling to make.
The Battle for Donbas and Russian Hybrid Warfare
The President warned that the Kremlin has not abandoned its maximalist goals. Russia is currently throwing everything it has into seizing the remainder of the Donetsk region, viewing it as a symbolic victory they must achieve before any potential truce.
Zelenskyy described the enemy's strategy as a "three-pronged attack" utilizing:
Information Warfare: Spreading propaganda to weaken Western resolve.
Diplomatic Pressure: Trying to isolate Kyiv.
Military Force: Relentless "meat wave" assaults on the ground.
"The enemy is using every tool available," Zelenskyy stated. "But Ukraine must defend itself."
As Washington reviews Kyiv’s proposals, the message from Zelenskyy is clear: Peace cannot come at the cost of Ukraine’s future security or the abandonment of its citizens to the invader.
