CaliToday (/2025): In a blistering critique that has sent shockwaves through the Bundestag and Brussels, prominent German foreign policy expert and CDU lawmaker Roderich Kiesewetter has issued a "Code Red" warning regarding President Trump’s newly released National Security Strategy (NSS).
According to Kiesewetter, the document confirms Europe’s worst fears: The era of the transatlantic security guarantee is effectively over, replaced by a Washington that views the European Union not as an ally, but as an economic rival and a "decaying civilization."
The End of the "Global Policeman"
Kiesewetter’s analysis of the Trump administration’s doctrine reveals a seismic shift in American foreign policy. He argues that the NSS goes beyond simply abandoning the role of "Global Policeman." Instead, it represents a deliberate decoupling from European security architecture.
"Anyone reading this document must understand: The US is no longer interested in Europe," Kiesewetter stated. "Even more than that: This Administration no longer sees Europe and specifically the EU as a partner, but largely as a strategic burden."
"State Over Institution": The EU as an Enemy
The German MP highlighted a dangerous ideological pivot in the White House: "State over Institution."
Under this doctrine, the Trump administration reportedly views the European Union not as a stabilizing force, but as a bureaucratic obstacle hostile to American interests.
Economic Rivalry: The NSS allegedly frames the EU as a competitor that must be "made to pay," signaling that trade wars may soon accompany security withdrawals.
Vassal Status: Kiesewetter described the new dynamic bluntly: Washington now treats European nations as "annoying vassal states that should pay tribute," rather than sovereign partners.
The Pacific Pivot: Leaving Europe Defenseless
Perhaps the most alarming aspect of Kiesewetter’s warning concerns the physical movement of military assets. He noted that the "military music" is now playing exclusively in the Indo-Pacific.
As the US focuses on containing China and fortifying Guam and Taiwan, critical assets needed for Europe’s defense specifically air defense systems and reconnaissance capabilities—are being redirected.
"There will be nothing left for us unless we build it ourselves," Kiesewetter warned, signaling a massive capability gap on NATO’s eastern flank just as Russian aggression remains a potent threat.
The "Decaying Civilization" Insult
Kiesewetter expressed particular outrage at the language used in the document, which reportedly refers to Europe’s "civilizational decline."
"This is a slap in the face. They are no longer entrusting the future to us. Anyone who writes about partners in this way will not stand by them when it really matters."
This rhetoric confirms that the Article 5 security guarantee, while perhaps legally intact, is spiritually dead in the eyes of the current White House.
The Call to Action: "Stop Begging, Start Building"
Despite the grim assessment, Kiesewetter a self-described devoted Transatlanticist urged Europe to stop mourning the loss of American protection and start acting. He called for an immediate end to the diplomatic "begging" in Washington.
The Path Forward:
Smart Power: Europe must build its own "intelligent power" capabilities to become independent and resilient.
Total Support for Ukraine: With the US pulling back, Kiesewetter argues that Europe must double down on its support for Kyiv.
"If Ukraine falls, Russia will be right at our borders, and Washington will not come to save us," he concluded. Integrating Ukraine into European defense now is legally and financially the only option: "It costs only half as much as a Russian success."
