A 10-Minute EV Charge? UK Startup's "Smart" Cooling Tech Slashes Charging Time by 68%

CaliToday (18/11/2025): One of the greatest hurdles for mass electric vehicle (EV) adoption remains the long wait at the charging station. While gas-powered cars refuel in minutes, even the fastest EVs need 30 minutes or more to get a significant charge.

Now, a thermal-technology startup in the United Kingdom has unveiled a breakthrough that could finally close the gap: a multi-zone battery cooling technology called Dectravalve.

This innovation promises to slash charging times, boost real-world driving range, and dramatically extend battery lifespan. It's being hailed as a critical breakthrough, solving the fundamental thermal bottleneck that has plagued the EV industry for decades.

The "Thermal Bottleneck" Problem

When an EV fast-charges, its battery generates an immense amount of heat. To protect itself from damage, the vehicle's management system intentionally "throttles" or slows down the charging speed once temperatures get too high (typically above 50°C or 122°F).

This is a major issue with current technology, which floods the entire battery pack with a uniform flow of coolant. This "one-size-fits-all" approach is inefficient. It can't target the specific "hot spots" that form in certain modules, leading to huge temperature differences across the pack, accelerated degradation, and, ultimately, a forced slowdown in charging.

A Smarter, "Multi-Zone" Solution

Dectravalve technology rips up the old playbook. Instead of treating the battery as one single block, it intelligently divides the pack into multiple independent thermal zones.

It acts like a sophisticated climate control system for the battery, allowing it to precisely heat or cool specific modules according to their real-time needs.

This precision control completely eliminates "hot spots" and ensures every single cell operates within its perfect temperature range, even under the most extreme fast-charging loads. The battery can, therefore, accept a much faster, sustained charge without throttling.

The Stunning Test Results

The data from independent testing is staggering, painting a clear picture of a new era in EV performance.

In a test on a 100 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery pack, the Dectravalve system demonstrated its superiority:

  • Drastic Temperature Reduction: The Dectravalve-equipped pack reached a maximum temperature of only 44.5°C (112.1°F). The conventional, current-generation EV it was tested against peaked at 56°C (132.8°F), well into the throttle zone.

  • Unprecedented Stability: The temperature difference between the hottest and coolest cells in the Dectravalve pack was a mere 2.6°C. In contrast, the standard EV pack showed a dangerous variance of over 12°C, which causes cell imbalance and long-term damage.

What This Means for Drivers

This breakthrough isn't just about numbers; it's about fundamentally changing the EV ownership experience.

1. A 68% Faster Charge (The 10-Minute "Refuel") By eliminating the thermal bottleneck, test results show fast-charging times can be reduced by up to 68%. This means a typical 10-80% charge on a 350kW fast charger could plummet from 30 minutes to just around 10 minutes a duration that directly competes with filling up at a gas or diesel pump.

2. A 10% Boost in Real-World Range A battery that operates in its ideal thermal range is a more efficient battery. This technology unlocks an estimated 10% increase in real-world driving range, adding an extra 30-40 miles per charge and lowering the overall cost of operation.

3. Enhanced Safety and Longevity By keeping temperatures low and stable, Dectravalve directly addresses the primary causes of battery degradation.

  • It reduces the risk of "lithium plating," a chemical process that permanently damages battery cells.

  • It virtually eliminates the risk of "thermal runaway," the chain reaction that can lead to battery fires.

This means the battery's State of Health (SoH) is protected, ensuring a much longer, safer, and more reliable lifespan. The technology is also "future-proof," as it is fully compatible with all current and future battery chemistries.
