ATHENS, Greece – A holiday trip to one of Greece's most iconic coastal landscapes has ended in tragedy after two tourists from Vietnam lost their lives in a devastating accident at Sarakiniko Beach on the island of Milos. The incident has prompted the Embassy of Vietnam in Greece to issue an urgent travel advisory, urging its citizens to exercise extreme caution when visiting the country's famous but often perilous natural attractions.
The two victims, whose identities have not yet been officially released pending full notification of their families, were reportedly exploring the unique lunar-like rock formations for which Sarakiniko is celebrated worldwide. According to local authorities on Milos, the preliminary investigation suggests the tourists fell from the white volcanic cliffs into the sea below.
Emergency services, including the Hellenic Coast Guard and local medical responders, were dispatched to the scene immediately after being alerted by other beachgoers. Despite a swift rescue operation, the two visitors were pronounced dead.
Sarakiniko Beach, often described as a "moonscape," is renowned for its smooth, white volcanic rock that has been sculpted by wind and waves into breathtaking shapes. While it is one of the most photographed locations in the Aegean, its terrain can be treacherous. The smooth surfaces can be slippery, and sudden gusts of wind or rogue waves pose a significant risk to visitors who venture too close to the cliff edges.
In response to the tragic event, the Embassy of Vietnam in Athens has been working closely with Greek authorities to handle the consular procedures and provide support for the victims' families.
The Embassy also issued a formal statement and travel warning. "We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life," the statement read. "We are in contact with local authorities and will provide all necessary assistance to the families of our citizens."
The advisory strongly urges all Vietnamese nationals traveling in Greece, particularly to coastal areas and islands like Milos, to be vigilant about their safety. The Embassy recommends that tourists strictly adhere to all posted safety signs and warnings, avoid venturing into non-designated or dangerous areas, and never underestimate the power of the natural environment.
"Please be aware of your surroundings, especially on cliffs and near the water," the advisory continued. "Weather conditions can change suddenly. Prioritize your safety above all else to ensure a safe and memorable journey."
Local officials on Milos expressed their profound sorrow over the incident, which has cast a somber shadow over the popular tourist destination. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal fall.
