CaliToday (11/12/2025): In response to the intensifying military confrontation between Thailand and Cambodia along the Dangrek Range, Vietnam has issued an urgent call for de-escalation, emphasizing the need to maintain stability within the ASEAN bloc.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in Hanoi released a statement late on December 11, expressing "deep concern" regarding the outbreak of hostilities and the reported seizure of strategic passes by Thai forces.
Diplomatic Stance: "Dialogue Over Conflict"
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, in a press briefing, urged both neighboring nations to exercise maximum restraint and return to the negotiating table.
"Vietnam closely monitors the situation on the Thailand-Cambodia border and calls on all parties to strictly respect the peace agreements signed in October. It is imperative to resolve disagreements through peaceful dialogue, in accordance with international law and the spirit of ASEAN solidarity, to prevent further loss of life."
Border Security and Citizen Protection
While the fighting is currently concentrated in the Dangrek Range (north of Cambodia, bordering Thailand), Vietnamese authorities are taking precautionary measures due to the potential for regional instability.
Border Monitoring: The Vietnam Border Guard High Command has reportedly heightened alert levels across southwestern provinces, particularly in An Giang and Kien Giang, to monitor for any spillover effects, including arms smuggling or irregular migration flows caused by the conflict.
Citizen Safety: The Vietnamese Embassies in Bangkok and Phnom Penh have issued safety advisories to Vietnamese nationals living in the affected border provinces of Surin (Thailand) and Oddar Meanchey (Cambodia), advising them to evacuate conflict zones immediately.
ASEAN Role: Analysts in Hanoi suggest that Vietnam may seek to activate an emergency ASEAN meeting to mediate the dispute, fearing that a prolonged conflict could destabilize the Mekong sub-region’s economy.
Economic Concerns
Trade experts warn that while the fighting is localized, prolonged closure of border checkpoints could disrupt the East-West Economic Corridor. Logistics companies in Ho Chi Minh City are already rerouting certain heavy cargo shipments to avoid the tense border areas.
