"He’s Starting to Look Like Himself": Wounded National Guardsman Andrew Wolfe Makes Slow Recovery as West Virginia Prays

CaliToday (06/12/2025/2025): A flicker of hope has emerged from the tragedy that struck the nation’s capital last week. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey announced on Friday, December 5, that National Guard Specialist Andrew Wolfe, who survived a brutal ambush near the White House, is showing small but significant signs of recovery.

National Guard Specialist Andrew Wolfe

Wolfe, 24, remains in the intensive care unit, fighting to heal from a severe head wound sustained during the November 26 attack. However, according to his parents, the swelling is receding, and his face is "starting to look like himself again" a relief to a family and a state that has spent the last week in anxious prayer.

A Community United in Prayer

While Wolfe fights his battle in a D.C. hospital, his hometown in Berkeley County has rallied around him. On Friday night, Musselman High School, Wolfe’s alma mater, hosted an emotional candlelight vigil.

Hundreds of community members gathered to honor the Class of 2019 graduate, whom Principal Alicia Riggleman described as an "exemplary student" who contributed to the school both academically and athletically.

"Andrew is a fighter," said a family friend at the vigil. "If anyone can pull through this, it’s him."

Wolfe is a member of the 167th Airlift Wing’s Force Support Squadron. In his civilian life, he has worked as a lineman for Frontier Communications since 2023, where colleagues describe him as hardworking, dedicated, and deeply responsible.

The Attack: A Grim Reminder of Service

Wolfe was injured alongside Pvt. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, while patrolling a Metro station just three blocks from the White House. The two were part of a deployment of over 2,000 troops ordered by President Trump to assist in a federal takeover of local policing duties to curb violent crime in the capital.

Tragically, Pvt. Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries the day after the attack, sparking national outrage and grief over the loss of a promising young life.

The Suspect and the Controversy

The man accused of the ambush, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, has been charged with murder and attempted murder. Lakanwal is an Afghan national who entered the U.S. during the Biden administration.

The incident has ignited a fierce political debate regarding vetting procedures for refugees. Reports indicate Lakanwal may not have been fully vetted upon entry, raising serious questions about national security protocols previously in place.

  • Status: Lakanwal was shot by security forces during the confrontation and is currently in federal custody.

  • Plea: He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Road Ahead

Governor Morrisey cautioned that Wolfe’s recovery will be a marathon, not a sprint. He is expected to remain in the ICU for at least another two to three weeks.

"Andrew is fighting hard every day," Morrisey stated, urging West Virginians to keep the Wolfe family in their thoughts. As the investigation continues and the legal proceedings against Lakanwal begin, the focus for the people of West Virginia remains on the hospital room in D.C., where a native son battles to come home.
