CaliToday (18/12/2025): The distinct grey silhouette of the Frigate 015 – Tran Hung Dao docked at the Kure Naval Base earlier this month, marking a significant chapter in the evolving defense relationship between Vietnam and Japan.
From December 7 to 10, a high-level delegation from the Vietnam People’s Navy (VPN) engaged in a comprehensive goodwill visit and joint training operations with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).
A Concrete Step in Strategic Partnership
This mission was not merely ceremonial. It serves as a concrete realization of the "Joint Vision Statement on Defense Cooperation" signed in 2018. Furthermore, it acts as a pillar for the recently elevated Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Japan, a framework dedicated to "Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World."
By sending one of its most modern Gepard-class frigates to Kure, Vietnam has signaled the growing importance of its maritime diplomacy with Tokyo.
“Soft Power” and Camaraderie
Before taking to the seas for drills, the visit focused on building trust and human connection essential elements of naval diplomacy.
The Vietnamese delegation paid a formal courtesy call to the Mayor of Kure, strengthening ties at the local government level. The atmosphere at the base was described as warm and cooperative, with officers and sailors from both nations touring each other's vessels to exchange technical knowledge.
Beyond the formal meetings, the crews participated in sports exchanges and cultural activities. These interactions broke down language barriers, fostering a spirit of camaraderie among the sailors who navigate the same regional waters.
Joint Training and Regional Security
The climax of the visit involved joint training exercises between Ship 015 and JMSDF vessels. These drills focused on enhancing interoperability, communication codes, and formation maneuvering.
Japanese officials emphasized their strong desire to continue strengthening defense and security cooperation with Vietnam. Both sides acknowledged that a strong bilateral relationship contributes directly to regional peace and stability, specifically addressing the complex security challenges in the South China Sea (East Sea) and the East China Sea.
This visit reaffirms that the Hanoi-Tokyo relationship is moving beyond economic aid and trade, evolving into a robust security partnership capable of maintaining a free and open maritime order.
