Japan Summons Chinese Ambassador Over Diplomat's "Extremely Inappropriate" Remarks; Taiwan Slams Beijing's "Threats"

Taiwan's National Security Chief Joseph Wu, in a message written in Japanese, condemned Beijing's "uncivilized actions" and "insulting statements" against Tokyo.

TOKYO/TAIPEI — A sharp diplomatic firestorm has erupted between Japan and China, prompting Tokyo to formally summon the Chinese Ambassador to lodge a strong protest over "extremely inappropriate" remarks made by a senior Chinese diplomat.

The incident immediately drew a forceful condemnation from Taiwan, whose top security official accused the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of undermining regional peace and threatening Japan with force.

Japan's Formal Protest

Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs took the serious diplomatic step of summoning the Chinese ambassador to object to comments made by Xue Jian, China's Consul-General in Osaka. While the specific content of Xue's speech was not immediately released, the "extremely inappropriate" label and the high-level response indicate the remarks were seen in Tokyo as a significant breach of diplomatic protocol, likely touching on sensitive security or sovereignty issues, such as Japan's relationship with Taiwan.

Taiwan Denounces "Uncivilized Actions"

The row was quickly seized upon by Joseph Wu, the Secretary-General of Taiwan's National Security Council and one of its most prominent international voices.

In a pointed message posted in Japanese on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Wu slammed Beijing's belligerence.

"Instead of reflecting on the offensive remarks by its diplomat, Xue Jian, the Chinese government continues to make statements insulting Japan and threatening it with force," Wu wrote, highlighting that Beijing was escalating the spat rather than apologizing.

Wu, who has long warned of China's "wolf warrior" diplomacy, directly linked Japan's situation to the pressure his own country faces daily.

"Taiwan has had to endure similar threats and pressure for many years," Wu continued. "Therefore, I strongly condemn these uncivilized actions by the Chinese government, which are undermining regional stability."

Wu's statement frames the incident not as an isolated diplomatic spat but as part of a persistent pattern of CCP behavior aimed at intimidating its neighbors. His decision to post in Japanese is a clear act of public solidarity with Tokyo, reinforcing the deepening, security-focused alignment between Taiwan and Japan in the face of a shared regional threat.
