CaliToday (25/11/2025): In a significant move that underscores the deepening security crisis in the East China Sea, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has confirmed the deployment of the advanced Type-03 "Chū-SAM" surface-to-air missile system to Yonaguni Island. The island, strategically located just approximately 110 kilometers (70 miles) from Taiwan, represents a critical forward position in Japan's defense posture.
Minister Koizumi stated that the deployment is a necessary measure to "mitigate the risk of an armed attack" and secure the region amidst escalating geopolitical tensions.
The Strategic Significance of Yonaguni
Yonaguni lies at a vital intersection, flanking crucial shipping lanes and air corridors between Taiwan and Japan. For years, Tokyo has expressed growing concern over the rapid increase in China's military activities in the Western Pacific, particularly around the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands and the Taiwan Strait.
