Northern Vietnam Grapples with Typhoon Bualoi's Aftermath Amidst Historic Flooding and Rising Death Toll

HANOI – Northern Vietnam continues to grapple with the catastrophic aftermath of Typhoon Bualoi (Storm No. 10), with recovery and rescue operations remaining the nation's top priority. The official death toll has risen, the capital remains crippled by historic flooding, and aid efforts are being hampered by widespread damage.

Death Toll Rises as Search for Missing Continues

Rescue teams in the mountainous northern province of Yen Bai have recovered the body of another victim swept away by flash floods. This tragic discovery brings the official number of people dead or missing from the disaster to 52.

Hope is fading for the 18 people who remain missing, primarily in landslide-prone areas of Hoa Binh and Yen Bai provinces. Rescue and recovery operations are continuing under extremely challenging conditions.

Hanoi Remains Submerged After Record Rainfall

While the torrential rains have ceased, Vietnam's capital, Hanoi, is still reeling from the effects of what has been described as a historic flooding event.

Although floodwaters have begun to slowly recede in some central areas, many low-lying regions and suburban districts such as Hoang Mai, Thanh Tri, and Hoai Duc—remain heavily inundated. Residents in these areas are now facing a secondary crisis, with shortages of clean drinking water and a rising risk of waterborne diseases. The city has mobilized all available forces to begin massive environmental cleanup and sanitation efforts to prevent disease outbreaks.

Aid Efforts Hampered by Damaged Infrastructure

The delivery of essential aid to remote, isolated villages in the mountainous Northwest has been severely hampered. Numerous inter-commune and inter-district roads remain impassable, cut off by landslides and collapsed sections. Military and relief organizations are struggling to transport food, water, and medical supplies to these hard-hit communities, where residents are in dire need of assistance.
