New Leadership Appointed in Vietnam's Mekong Delta: Can Tho City and An Giang Province Welcome New Heads

HANOI, VIETNAM – Significant leadership changes have been announced in two key localities of Vietnam's vital Mekong Delta region. Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen has been officially elected as the new Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, while Mr. Nguyen Tien Hai has been appointed by the Politburo to serve as the new Party Secretary of An Giang Province. These appointments mark a new chapter in the administrative and political leadership for both regions.

In a formal session held by the People's Council of Can Tho City, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen was elected to the position of Chairman of the municipal People's Committee for the 2021-2026 term. The election saw overwhelming support from the council members present, reflecting a strong consensus on his leadership capabilities.

Mr. Tuyen is a seasoned official with extensive experience in the region's governance. Prior to this new role, he served as the Standing Vice Chairman of the Can Tho People's Committee, a position that provided him with deep insights into the city's socio-economic operations and developmental challenges. His career has been closely tied to the Mekong Delta, having held various key posts within the local government apparatus.

As the new Chairman, Mr. Tuyen will be responsible for overseeing the entire executive branch of the city's government. His primary duties will involve directing and managing the implementation of socio-economic development plans, urban management, and administrative reforms.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Tuyen pledged to lead the city's administration with a focus on sustainable growth, enhancing urban infrastructure, and improving the quality of life for citizens. Can Tho, as the central hub of the Mekong Delta, faces both significant opportunities and challenges, including climate change adaptation, economic diversification, and digital transformation. His leadership will be crucial in navigating these issues and steering the city towards its strategic goals.

In a separate high-level decision, the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam has appointed Mr. Nguyen Tien Hai to the position of Party Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee. The announcement was made during a formal ceremony attended by senior party officials.

The role of Party Secretary is the highest leadership position within a province's political structure, responsible for guiding the overall direction of its development, party-building work, and personnel matters.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Hai brings a wealth of experience from his previous post as the Deputy Party Secretary and Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau Province, another key province in the Mekong Delta. His tenure in Ca Mau was marked by notable achievements in economic development and investment attraction. His appointment to An Giang is seen as a move to leverage his proven leadership skills to foster growth in a province known for its agricultural strengths, particularly in rice and aquaculture, as well as its strategic border with Cambodia.

As the new leader of the An Giang Party Committee, Mr. Hai is expected to focus on strengthening the province's economy, ensuring social stability and national defense, and promoting cross-border trade and cooperation. His immediate priorities will likely include overseeing the implementation of the provincial master plan and addressing key local issues. The appointment by the Politburo underscores the central government's confidence in his ability to lead An Giang through its next phase of development.
