President Donald Trump has just sent a seismic shockwave through the American academic establishment.
In a move that threatens to upend decades of university policy, the President, alongside Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, has unveiled the "Compact for Academic Excellence." It’s a new, binding agreement with a premise that is both stunningly simple and profoundly disruptive: "No Free Speech, No Federal Funds."
On the surface, the requirements sound like the core principles of a classic liberal arts education: protect open and public debate, respect viewpoint diversity, and maintain a core focus on academic excellence rather than partisan political activism.
Yet, America’s elite universities are reacting with predictable fury. The policy is being decried as "authoritarian" and an "assault on academic freedom."
