Ho Chi Minh City to Build Six Mega-Bridges by 2030 in Bid to Slash Congestion and Boost Regional Links

CaliToday (14/10/2025): In a massive push to revolutionize its urban infrastructure, Ho Chi Minh City is set to construct six major bridges between 2025 and 2030. The ambitious plan, a cornerstone of the city's Political Report for the 2025-2030 term, is designed to create a breakthrough in transportation, drastically reduce chronic traffic congestion, and significantly enhance connectivity with neighboring provinces.

The six key projects Nguyen Khoai Bridge Road, Binh Tien Bridge Road, Thu Thiem 4 Bridge, Can Gio Bridge, Cat Lai Bridge, and Phu My 2 Bridge—represent a monumental investment aimed at untangling the city's notorious traffic knots and paving the way for future economic growth.

Here is a detailed look at each of the transformative projects:

1. Nguyen Khoai Bridge Road

This project is slated to be a critical artery connecting the city's southern districts with the central core.

  • Timeline: Construction is scheduled to begin in November 2025 and conclude in the fourth quarter of 2027.

  • Investment: The total capital investment is over 3,724 billion VND.

  • Specifications: The project features a 2.5-kilometer elevated concrete bridge system, varying in width from 6.5 to 25.5 meters. It will cross the Te Canal and Ben Nghe Creek, linking the former districts of 7 and 4 to District 1. The project also includes 1.1 km of access roads and the expansion of key local streets.

  • Impact: Once operational, the Nguyen Khoai Bridge will provide a seamless elevated route from the southern area to the city center, significantly alleviating traffic pressure on the perennially congested Nguyen Huu Tho - Kenh Te Bridge axis and other major roads.

2. Binh Tien Bridge Road

Designed to forge a new north-south transport axis, this bridge will provide a vital link over two major canals.

  • Timeline: Following compensation and resettlement approvals in December 2025, construction is set for 2026-2028.

  • Investment: The project has a total investment of nearly 6,300 billion VND.

  • Specifications: Spanning 3.66 km, with a 3.1 km elevated section, the bridge will feature 4 to 6 lanes. It will start from Pham Van Chi Street (former District 6), cross the Tau Hu and Doi canals, and connect directly to the major Nguyen Van Linh Parkway.

  • Impact: The Binh Tien Bridge will create a crucial new corridor connecting the city's central and western areas with the developing southern region.

3. Thu Thiem 4 Bridge

This long-awaited bridge will connect the southern area directly to the landmark Thu Thiem New Urban Area in the east.

  • Timeline: The city aims to secure project approval this year and complete construction by 2028.

  • Investment: Estimated costs range from 4,365 to 8,953 billion VND, depending on the final design.

  • Specifications: The 2.16 km bridge (with a 1.6 km main span) will feature six lanes. It will connect the Tan Thuan 2 Bridge - Nguyen Van Linh interchange across the Saigon River to Thu Thiem. The project has faced delays due to prolonged debate over the navigational clearance height required for river traffic.

  • Impact: This bridge will drastically shorten travel times between the city's eastern and southern hubs and reduce severe congestion on key downtown routes like Ton Duc Thang, Nguyen Tat Thanh, and Khanh Hoi Bridge.

4. Can Gio Bridge

This iconic bridge will finally replace the Binh Khanh ferry, providing a reliable, high-capacity link to the coastal Can Gio district.

  • Timeline: The project aims for approval in 2025, with a construction period from 2026 to 2028.

  • Investment: Total projected investment is approximately 10,569 billion VND.

  • Specifications: With a total length of 7.3 km, the six-lane bridge will feature a massive 55-meter navigational clearance for large vessels. It is designed for a speed of 60 km/h.

  • Impact: The Can Gio Bridge will be a game-changer, eliminating long ferry queues and significantly cutting travel time between the city center and the eco-tourism-focused Can Gio district, unlocking its development potential.

5. Cat Lai Bridge

This critical inter-provincial project will replace the overburdened Cat Lai ferry, connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Nhon Trach district in neighboring Dong Nai province.

  • Timeline: The goal is to commence construction in 2026 and finish by 2028.

  • Investment: A substantial investment of nearly 20,000 billion VND is planned.

  • Specifications: The bridge and its access roads will span 11.4 km and feature eight lanes to accommodate the heavy flow of traffic.

  • Impact: This bridge is vital for economic connectivity, easing the daily commute for tens of thousands of people and streamlining freight transport between Nhon Trach's industrial parks and major port systems like Cat Lai and Cai Mep - Thi Vai.

6. Phu My 2 Bridge

As a parallel to the existing Phu My Bridge, this new crossing will form a crucial part of a modern inter-regional transport ring.

  • Timeline: Part of the 2025-2030 development plan.

  • Investment: The preliminary total investment is a massive 21,484 billion VND, including 6,250 billion VND for site clearance.

  • Specifications: The entire route will be 16.7 km long with eight lanes. It will connect the South Saigon urban area (from Nguyen Huu Tho Street) across the Dong Nai River to the Lien Cang - 25C highway in Dong Nai.

  • Impact: The Phu My 2 Bridge is a strategic project designed to link HCMC’s southern economic hub directly with the new Long Thanh International Airport, solidifying the city's role as a regional logistics and transportation powerhouse.
