A staggering 1,739 mm of rain the highest daily total ever recorded in Vietnam has submerged Huế, while Da Nang evacuates over 15,000 as a major emergency response is underway.
CaliToday (29/10/2025): Central Vietnam is in the grip of an extremely critical and catastrophic flooding event, as a record-shattering deluge has isolated entire communities, triggered mass evacuations, and prompted an urgent, large-scale military and government response.
The epicenters of the disaster are the coastal cities of Da Nang and Huế, and the province of Quảng Nam, where river levels are swelling to historic highs.
Emergency Warning: Hội An May Break 60-Year Flood Record
In the most urgent warning issued this afternoon (as of 4:09 PM), authorities are predicting that the floodwaters on the Thu Bồn River in the ancient, UNESCO-listed city of Hội An may surpass the all-time historic flood record of 1964 later tonight.
This is an emergency-level alert. Residents and authorities in the low-lying ancient town are bracing for an unprecedented scenario as the river threatens to inundate the city in a disaster not seen in 60 years.
Devastation in Da Nang: 15,886 Evacuated
The coastal metropolis of Da Nang has been hammered by the torrential rains, leaving a trail of devastation.
Mass Evacuations: At least 10 communes and wards are completely isolated by floodwaters. Authorities have conducted a massive emergency evacuation, moving 15,886 people to safety.
Human Toll: Preliminary reports paint a grim picture. In Da Nang alone, authorities have confirmed 2 people dead, 3 missing, and 11 houses have completely collapsed. Thousands of other homes are deeply submerged.
Record-Shattering Rainfall Submerges Huế
The cause of the catastrophe is an unprecedented rainfall event. At the Bạch Mã station, located in the mountains of Thừa Thiên Huế province, an astonishing 1,739 millimeters (nearly 1.74 meters or 5.7 feet) of rain was recorded in a single 24-hour period.
Officials have confirmed this is the highest daily rainfall total ever recorded in Vietnam's history.
As a result, vast areas of the former Imperial City of Huế are deeply underwater, with historic sites and residential neighborhoods alike inundated.
All-Out Emergency Response Mobilized
The Vietnamese government has mobilized an all-out emergency response. The Prime Minister has issued an urgent directive ordering the "highest concentration of all resources" to respond to the floods and immediately address the consequences.
In a sign of the crisis's severity, the Ministry of Defense has deployed the Mobile Police (Cảnh sát cơ động) to conduct high-risk, night-time evacuations, racing to rescue citizens trapped in the most dangerous, low-lying areas.
