CaliToday (08/10/2025): The city of Hanoi initiated a major infrastructure undertaking today, breaking ground on the Thuong Cat Bridge, a massive new crossing over the iconic Red River. The project, which includes the bridge and over 5 kilometers of connecting roads, carries a total investment of more than VND 7.3 trillion (approximately US$295 million) and is slated for completion in 2027.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held on the morning of October 8th, was hosted by the Hanoi People's Committee and marks a significant step in the capital's ambitious plan to enhance its transportation network. The project is designed to progressively complete the city's planned infrastructure framework, ease chronic traffic congestion, and accelerate the development of new urban areas on the city's periphery.
Stretching from Ky Vu Street in the Thuong Cat ward to an intersection with National Highway 23B in Thien Loc commune, the project will serve as a vital link between Hanoi's districts. The main bridge will feature a modern cable-stayed design, a structure known for both its engineering elegance and structural efficiency.
Upon completion, the bridge will span an impressive width, accommodating eight lanes of traffic—six for motorized vehicles and two dedicated lanes for non-motorized transport—to ensure smooth traffic flow for all commuters. The entire project will be funded by the city's budget.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Duong Duc Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, emphasized the project's strategic importance. "This project will help complete the core transportation infrastructure framework according to the master plan, connecting the areas north of the Red River and contributing to the finalization of Ring Road 3.5," he stated.
Vice Chairman Tuan further noted that the Thuong Cat Bridge will play a pivotal role in strengthening connectivity between the northwestern region and the central urban core of the capital. By alleviating traffic pressure on the heavily used Ring Road 3, the new bridge is expected to be a catalyst for socio-economic development, unlocking the potential of satellite urban zones and fostering new growth for Hanoi.
