Taxi Driver Arrested for Extorting Female Passenger 2.5 Million VND for 70km Ride, Sparking Public Outrage

CaliToday (13/9/2025): Authorities have made an emergency arrest of a taxi driver following a viral incident in which he allegedly extorted 2.5 million VND (approximately $100 USD) from a female passenger for a 70-kilometer trip, a fare nearly ten times the standard rate. The case has ignited widespread public anger on social media and prompted a swift response from law enforcement.

The incident came to light after the victim shared her ordeal online, which quickly gained traction. According to her account, she hired the taxi for a journey of roughly 70km, a trip that would typically cost between 250,000 and 350,000 VND. Upon reaching the destination, the driver demanded the exorbitant sum of 2.5 million VND. Feeling intimidated and in a vulnerable position, the passenger was coerced into paying the amount.

The story sparked immediate and intense condemnation from the public, with thousands of users sharing the post and calling for immediate action against the driver. Netizens expressed frustration over such predatory practices, which tarnish the image of the city and pose a threat to the safety of both residents and tourists.

Responding to the public outcry and a formal complaint from the victim, police launched an urgent investigation. Using traffic surveillance footage and information provided by the passenger, investigators were able to quickly identify the driver and his vehicle.

Within a short period, the suspect was located and taken into custody for questioning. In a move to gather concrete evidence for prosecution, police have also conducted a crime scene reconstruction. This procedure involved escorting the driver back along the 70km route with the victim present to re-enact the sequence of events, from the point of pickup to the final destination where the payment was demanded.

A police official stated, "This is not a simple case of overcharging; the element of coercion elevates the seriousness of the offense. We are treating this matter with utmost urgency to send a clear message that such criminal behavior will not be tolerated."

The driver is expected to face charges of extortion, which carries significant penalties. This incident has also renewed calls for stricter regulation of taxi services, particularly unlicensed or independent drivers who operate without official meters and prey on unsuspecting passengers. Authorities are advising the public to use reputable taxi companies or ride-hailing apps and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
