South Korean Foreign Minister to Visit China This Week

CaliToday (15/9/2025): South Korea's Foreign Minister, Cho Hyun, will travel to China for a two-day visit from September 17th to the 18th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday.

The ministry stated that Cho is scheduled to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on Wednesday. The discussions are expected to cover a wide range of topics, including detailed plans for a potential visit to South Korea by Chinese President Xi Jinping next month.

The diplomatic engagement comes as South Korea prepares to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. Top South Korean officials have extended invitations to both President Xi and United States President Donald Trump to attend the event, which is scheduled to be held in Gyeongju on October 31st.

In a related diplomatic effort, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has encouraged President Trump to consider a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his potential visit to the region.

The visit also follows recent high-level interactions between China and North Korea. This month, President Xi appeared alongside Chairman Kim Jong Un at a military parade in Beijing. The two leaders also held a separate bilateral meeting, marking their first such discussion in six years.

South Korea has consistently urged Beijing to play a constructive role in persuading Pyongyang to return to dialogue regarding its nuclear program. The upcoming talks between the foreign ministers will likely be another opportunity for Seoul to emphasize this point and seek China's cooperation in fostering stability on the Korean Peninsula.
