CaliToday (01/10/2025): Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has taken a firm stance in support of Israel amid escalating tensions in the Gaza Strip, calling for an international aid flotilla bound for the territory to be halted. Her position aligns with Israel's long-standing naval blockade of the coastal enclave.
In her statement, Prime Minister Meloni referenced a controversial 2011 United Nations conclusion which, while criticizing aspects of Israel's blockade, deemed it a legal security measure. The blockade restricts maritime access to Gaza to a six-nautical-mile limit and has been a point of contention under international humanitarian law.
Meloni also announced her government's support for the latest peace plan proposed by the U.S. administration, a move that is expected to face strong opposition from Hamas and could further inflame tensions in the region.
Turkey Backs Flotilla in Direct Challenge to Israel
The Italian leader's call comes in direct opposition to the position of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who has publicly welcomed and supported the aid flotilla. The 2025 "Gaza Freedom Flotilla" is a significant international effort, reportedly comprising more than 50 ships from 44 different countries, aiming to break the blockade and deliver humanitarian supplies directly.
In a move that directly challenges Israel's maritime sovereignty claims, Ankara is reportedly providing the flotilla with drone surveillance support, a move seen as highly provocative by Israel.
The Israeli government has responded with a hardline stance. Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir asserted that Tel Aviv would deal firmly with any attempt to breach its naval blockade. The competing positions of Italy and Turkey, both major regional powers, have set the stage for a tense and potentially volatile confrontation at sea as the flotilla approaches Gazan waters.
