CaliToday (17/9/2025): The Hanoi People's Committee has officially announced an ambitious plan to break ground on a series of key transportation infrastructure projects. The initiative, aimed at tackling the city's persistent traffic bottlenecks and promoting balanced urban growth, will feature the construction of two new major bridges spanning the Red River and the launch of a new metro line.
This major infrastructure push is seen as a critical step in modernizing the capital's transport network, which has struggled to keep pace with rapid population growth and a dramatic increase in the number of private vehicles. The new projects are designed to create new arteries for traffic flow, enhance connectivity between the city center and its burgeoning satellite districts, and encourage the use of public transportation.
Key projects slated for groundbreaking include:
Tứ Liên Bridge: This will be a landmark project, not just for its scale but also for its strategic location. Connecting the Tay Ho district with the Dong Anh district, the Tứ Liên Bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel time to Noi Bai International Airport and open up new development corridors on the northern side of the Red River.
Thượng Cát Bridge: Situated in the northern part of the capital, this bridge will link the Bac Tu Liem district with the Dong Anh district. It is a vital component of the city's Ring Road No. 3.5, designed to divert heavy traffic away from the congested inner-city areas.
Metro Line No. 5 (Văn Cao - Ngọc Khánh - Láng - Hòa Lạc): The launch of this new metro line is a cornerstone of the city's strategy to develop its public transport capacity. The line will connect the downtown Ba Dinh district with the Hòa Lạc High-Tech Park in the city's western suburbs. This is crucial for supporting the development of the high-tech park as a major economic and educational hub and for encouraging residents to move to less-congested satellite areas.
In the announcement, city officials emphasized that these projects are not merely about solving traffic jams but are part of a broader vision for the capital's future. By improving connectivity across the Red River, Hanoi aims to transform the northern districts into new centers of economic and residential growth, easing the immense pressure on the city's traditional core.
