Tit-for-Tat Strikes: Russia Alleges "Large-Scale" Drone Attack on Belgorod as Ukraine Claims Destruction of Key Ammo Depot

CaliToday (22/9/2025): Tensions along the Russia-Ukraine border continued to escalate on Monday as both sides issued claims of significant military strikes, highlighting the increasingly reciprocal nature of the conflict.

Russian authorities have accused Ukraine of launching a "large-scale" drone attack on its Belgorod region, while the Ukrainian armed forces have announced the successful destruction of a crucial Russian ammunition depot in the occupied Donetsk region.

Russia Claims "Large-Scale" Assault on Belgorod

Officials in Russia's Belgorod region, which lies directly adjacent to the Ukrainian border, reported a sustained overnight drone attack. The governor of Belgorod, Vyacheslav Gladkov, stated that air defense systems were active throughout the night repelling the "large-scale" assault.

According to preliminary reports from the Russian side, the attack caused some damage to civilian infrastructure. Unverified videos on Russian Telegram channels showed fires at several locations, and officials reported that residential buildings and power lines were damaged in some settlements.

"The enemy attempted to strike our infrastructure with dozens of UAVs," the Russian Ministry of Defence said in a statement. "Most aerial threats were neutralized, but there is some damage on the ground which is being assessed."

Belgorod has long served as a key logistical hub for the Russian military since the start of the full-scale invasion, and the region has been a frequent target of cross-border attacks. Analysts suggest that Ukrainian strikes on areas like Belgorod are aimed at disrupting Russian supply lines, putting pressure on their air defenses, and bringing the reality of the war closer to the Russian populace.

Ukraine Claims Destruction of Key Ammunition Depot in Donetsk

Meanwhile, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine issued a counter-narrative, claiming a significant military success in the east. In a statement released on Monday, the Ukrainian military said it had carried out a precision strike on a major Russian ammunition depot near the occupied city of Donetsk.

"As a result of an effective fire mission by the Defence Forces, a significant enemy ammunition depot was destroyed," the statement read, accompanied by satellite imagery purportedly showing the site before and after the strike. "This arsenal was critical for supplying Russian troops operating on the Donetsk front."

The destruction of ammunition depots and logistical hubs is a core part of Ukraine's strategy to degrade Russia's combat capabilities. By targeting supply chains, Ukraine seeks to create "shell hunger" for Russian frontline units, reducing their ability to conduct offensive operations.

The claims from either side have not been independently verified. However, the parallel reports underscore an increasingly intense phase of the war, characterized by Ukraine’s growing capacity to strike strategic targets deep inside Russian territory, while Russia continues its own assaults on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
