An Giang's Grand Vision: From Sacred Mountains to 'Pearl Island' Phu Quoc, a New Tourism Powerhouse Emerges

An Giang province is leveraging its uniquely diverse tapestry of nature, heritage, and culture to transform its tourism sector into a powerful engine for economic growth. Following a strategic administrative merger, the province is working to elevate its distinct tourism products to achieve both national and international acclaim, positioning itself as one of Southeast Asia's most dynamic destinations.

Leveraging a Vast and Varied Landscape

The "new" An Giang boasts an incredibly diverse portfolio of resources, stretching from the river deltas and mountains of the mainland to the pristine seas and islands of the coast. This unique combination has created a collection of world-class tourism clusters.

"Following the merger, An Giang has become a vast territory that brings together diverse resources from plains, sea and islands, mountains and forests, to borderlands and inland rivers," said Bui Quoc Thai, Director of the An Giang Provincial Department of Tourism. "This has endowed An Giang with many destinations and famous tourism products, both in Vietnam and globally."

The province’s key tourism clusters include:

  • Phu Quoc: Positioned as a high-quality center for eco-tourism and a sea and island destination of international stature.

  • Ha Tien - Kien Luong - Kien Hai: Known for marine and island eco-tourism intertwined with the province's rich cultural and historical sites.

  • Vinh Te - Sam Mountain: A famous hub for spiritual tourism, anchored by the revered Ba Chua Xu Temple.

  • National Parks & Forests: U Minh Thuong and Phu Quoc National Parks, along with the Tra Su Cajuput Forest, offer renowned eco-tourism experiences linked to revolutionary history and scientific research.

This renewed focus has already yielded impressive results, with a rapid recovery and growth in both domestic and international visitor numbers.

Ngo Thanh Hai, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City who recently spent four days exploring Sam Mountain, Tra Su Forest, Ha Tien, and Phu Quoc, shared his excitement. "An Giang now has so many fascinating destinations, from the mountains to the sea, and the food is delicious," he said. "We will definitely return to An Giang soon to explore even more."

Phu Quoc: The International Engine of Growth

At the heart of An Giang's international ambitions is Phu Quoc. With major advancements in transport infrastructure and tourism services, the "pearl island" is rapidly transforming into a global hub. A host of luxury resorts, modern entertainment complexes like Aquatopia Water Park and VinWonders, and world-class services cater to high-end, family, and youth travel segments.

"I think this is a place our family could come back to every year. Phu Quoc is so beautiful," shared Daniel Jason, a tourist from the UK. "I love the scenery of the beaches and really enjoy the services here."

The province is focusing its resources on developing Phu Quoc into a national and international center for high-class eco-tourism, aiming to welcome over 3 million international visitors by 2030. This ambitious goal is underscored by plans to host the APEC 2027 summit, a move that will significantly boost the island's global profile.

"Phu Quoc hosting APEC 2027, with a series of strategic projects being strongly implemented, will undoubtedly be the driving force for the 'pearl island' to realize its long-term vision of becoming a world-class tourism center," said Nguyen Vu Khac Huy, Permanent Vice Chairman of the An Giang Tourism Association.

Embracing New Markets and Sustainable Growth

The strategy is already paying off. According to Nguyen Trung Thanh, Deputy Director of the An Giang Department of Tourism, the province welcomed nearly 20 million visitors in the first nine months of 2025. Phu Quoc alone accounted for over 6.5 million of those, including more than 1.2 million international arrivals, generating an estimated tourism revenue of over 51 trillion VND.

Notably, the island is seeing a surge from new markets. "Phu Quoc welcomed about 96,000 Indian tourists and 36,000 Malaysian tourists," Thanh noted. "The Muslim international tourist market is growing and is forecast to increase sharply. Therefore, we have asked the tourism association and businesses to actively learn about and implement Halal certification standards to better serve Muslim visitors."

This requires a deep understanding of specific cultural needs. "The standards for Muslim travelers are quite distinct, from culture and communication to cuisine and Halal-compliant hotel rooms," explained Tran Van Tan Cuong, Director of Vietnam National Halal Company. "Businesses in Phu Quoc need to collaborate to ensure they meet Halal criteria to better serve this market."

Building a World-Class Tourism Brand

Looking ahead, An Giang aims to welcome 39.5 million tourists by 2030, with total revenue reaching 108.450 trillion VND. By 2050, the vision is for An Giang to be a distinctive, world-class sea and island destination and a regional center for green tourism, focusing on sustainability and community-based development.

To achieve this, the province is innovating its promotional campaigns, strengthening regional links with Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, and boosting international cooperation through events like APEC 2027. The focus remains on developing high-quality, sustainable tourism products, improving infrastructure, investing in human resources, and accelerating digital transformation to create a safe, civilized, and friendly tourism environment for all visitors.
