A Tale of Two Heads: The Astonishing Discovery of a Bicephalic Sea Turtle in South Carolina

On a sun-drenched July day in 2019, amidst the golden sands of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, volunteers with the Sea Turtle Patrol were conducting their vital work. Their mission was a familiar one: to monitor a recently hatched sea turtle nest, counting the empty shells and helping any stragglers find their way to the vast Atlantic Ocean. But on this day, their routine task would lead to a once-in-a-lifetime discovery that captured the world's attention. Buried among the empty shells was a tiny, living marvel: a single sea turtle hatchling with two fully formed heads.


The rare condition, known scientifically as bicephaly, is a congenital abnormality that occurs during embryonic development. Similar to the formation of conjoined twins in humans, the embryo begins to split into two separate individuals but fails to complete the process, leaving them fused together.
