HANOI, Vietnam – In a significant advancement for social security and digital healthcare, Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security has announced that citizens will soon be able to receive prescription medication delivered directly to their homes using the VNeID national digital identity application.
The groundbreaking service will be introduced through a pilot program starting in September 2025, with plans for an official nationwide rollout in October 2025. This initiative aims to streamline healthcare services, enhance patient convenience, and increase transparency in the pharmaceutical supply chain.
The new system will function by creating a seamless data link between hospitals, pharmacies, and patients through the secure VNeID platform. The process is designed to be simple and user-friendly:
E-Prescription Integration: Following a medical examination, a doctor's electronic prescription (e-prescription) will be automatically and securely synchronized with the patient's personal VNeID account.
Pharmacy Selection in-App: The user can then open their VNeID app, access the integrated e-prescription, and select from a list of registered and authenticated partner pharmacies. Major pharmacy chains like FPT Long Chau and An Khang are among the first to have partnered on the initiative.
Home Delivery or Express Pickup: After selecting a pharmacy, the user can confirm their order and choose to have the medicine delivered to their registered address or prepared for an express pickup, thereby bypassing long queues at often-overcrowded hospital pharmacies.
This initiative is a core component of Vietnam's ambitious National Digital Transformation Project 06, which leverages the national population database to reform administrative procedures. The Ministry of Public Security is leading the project, which is expected to bring numerous benefits to citizens and the healthcare system alike.
Key Benefits of the VNeID Medicine Service:
Unmatched Convenience: The service offers immense convenience, especially for the elderly, patients with mobility issues, and individuals with busy schedules, saving them time and effort.
Enhanced Safety and Reduced Risk: By allowing patients to avoid crowded hospitals and pharmacies, the system helps reduce the risk of cross-infection, a particularly valuable feature for those with compromised immune systems.
Increased Transparency and Security: The use of VNeID for authenticating both the patient and the pharmacy ensures a secure transaction. It helps combat the sale of counterfeit or poor-quality medicines, guarantees that prescription drugs are sold by licensed providers, and protects users' personal health data.
Modernization of Healthcare: The system marks a major step in creating a centralized digital health record for citizens, making healthcare management more efficient for both patients and medical professionals.
The upcoming launch is built upon the successful integration of various other essential documents into the VNeID application, including citizen identity cards, driver's licenses, and health insurance cards. By linking prescription data, the Vietnamese government is moving closer to its goal of creating a comprehensive digital ecosystem that simplifies the daily lives of its citizens and modernizes state governance.
