Northern Vietnam on High Alert as Tropical Depression in South China Sea Expected to Intensify into Typhoon

HANOI – Coastal provinces in northern Vietnam, from Quang Ninh to Nghe An, are on high alert this morning as a newly formed tropical depression in the South China Sea (known in Vietnam as the East Sea) is tracking rapidly on a west-northwest course and is forecast to strengthen into a typhoon before entering the Gulf of Tonkin in the coming days.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the weather system is currently gathering strength over open water. Its projected path and rapid development have prompted urgent preparations across the region, which is vulnerable to the destructive force of typhoons during this season.

In response to the imminent threat, disaster management authorities in the affected coastal provinces have begun urgently implementing storm prevention and response measures. An official directive has been issued, calling for all fishing vessels and marine traffic to cease operations at sea and return to safe harbors immediately. Provincial authorities are working closely with border guard forces and fisheries associations to ensure that all sailors are accounted for and that vessels are securely anchored to withstand strong winds and rough seas.

Local governments are also preparing for potential impacts on land, including heavy rainfall, high winds, and the risk of flash flooding and landslides, particularly in mountainous and low-lying areas. Emergency response teams are being placed on standby, and plans for potential evacuations in high-risk zones are being reviewed.

Citizens are being strongly advised to take the situation seriously and prepare accordingly. The public is urged to:

  • Stay Informed: Closely monitor official weather forecasts and storm advisories issued by government agencies through television, radio, and official online channels.
  • Secure Property: Reinforce homes, trim large tree branches that could fall, and secure any loose objects outdoors.
  • Prepare Emergency Kits: Assemble a kit with essential supplies, including non-perishable food, drinking water, first-aid supplies, flashlights, and extra batteries.

Authorities have emphasized that timely preparation is critical to minimizing potential damage and ensuring the safety of lives and property. As the system continues its approach, further updates and more specific warnings will be issued.
