The decision, which solidifies his leadership over the city's defense and security matters, was formally announced at a conference held by the city's Party Committee today.

Chief Nguyen Van Nen Takes on Top Military-Party Role

The appointment was made by the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee and confirms Mr. Nen's leadership role for the 2020-2025 term.

This move is a standard and significant procedure within Vietnam's political system, reflecting the principle of the Communist Party of Vietnam's absolute and direct leadership over the nation's armed forces. By tradition, the top civilian party leader of a province or major city also serves as the head of the corresponding military party committee.

In this capacity, Mr. Nen will be responsible for overseeing the political direction, ideology, and personnel appointments within the Ho Chi Minh City Military Command. His duties will involve ensuring that all local defense and military activities align with the strategic objectives of the Communist Party and the state.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nen is one of Vietnam's top political figures. As a member of the Politburo—the highest decision-making body of the Communist Party—and the Party Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City, he already holds the most powerful position in Vietnam's economic engine.

This new appointment effectively consolidates leadership over all major facets of the city's governance—from economic policy and social development to internal security and local defense—under his authority. The conference to announce the decision was attended by senior officials from both the civilian Party Committee and the military command, underscoring the importance of unified leadership in the city.

The appointment ensures a streamlined command structure and reinforces the party's comprehensive control, a foundational element of Vietnam's governance, as Ho Chi Minh City continues to navigate its path of development and security for the remainder of the 2020-2025 term.
