CaliToday (03/11/2025): Vietnam is grappling with a multi-faceted severe weather crisis this morning, as a powerful typhoon approaches, a cold front grips the north, and devastating floods continue to plague the central region, leading to fatal accidents and widespread damage.
Typhoon Kalmaegi Approaches South China Sea
Weather authorities are issuing urgent warnings for Typhoon Kalmaegi, which is currently moving towards the South China Sea (known in Vietnam as the Biển Đông).
It is expected to become the 13th typhoon of the season. Forecasts indicate the storm could become extremely strong, potentially reaching Level 14, bringing devastating winds and rain. The Central region of Vietnam, already saturated, is bracing for a potential direct impact.
Intense Flooding and Damage in Central Vietnam
The central provinces, from Nghe An to Quang Ngai, remain on high alert as they continue to endure relentless heavy rain, exacerbated by the incoming storm system and the existing cold front.
Rising Rivers: Major rivers in the region are swelling dangerously. In Hue, the Huong and Bo rivers are rising again. Similarly, the Vu Gia and Thu Bon rivers in Quang Nam and Da Nang are experiencing rising floodwaters, threatening further inundation.
Fatal Reservoir Breach in Lam Dong: A catastrophic incident occurred in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong when a mountain reservoir breached. A powerful flash flood of mud and debris surged through a residential area, tragically sweeping away three members of a single family. The event has caused extensive and heavy damage to the community.
Bridge Collapse in Quang Ngai: In Quang Ngai province, the Cay Sung Bridge in Binh Son district collapsed amid heavy rainfall. Reports confirm a motorbike rider fell into the rushing waters below. The collapse has severed a key access route, isolating more than 1,200 households.
Cold Snap Hits Northern Vietnam
Simultaneously, Northern Vietnam is experiencing a sudden and significant drop in temperature. An intensified cold front moved into the region this morning, bringing widespread rain and cold, winter-like conditions.
In the capital city of Hanoi, temperatures are forecast to hover between just 17°C and 21°C (62°F - 70°F).
