US to Provide Ukraine with Intelligence for Strikes on Russian Energy Targets in Major Policy Shift

CaliToday (02/10/2025): In a significant escalation of its support for Kyiv, the United States will begin providing Ukraine with intelligence for long-range strikes against energy infrastructure targets deep inside Russia. The White House also announced it is formally calling on its NATO allies to provide similar assistance.

This is the first major public policy shift approved by the U.S. President that reflects a significantly tougher stance on Moscow. The move is designed to cripple the Kremlin's primary source of revenue, which funds its ongoing war effort.

The intelligence sharing will make it easier for Ukrainian forces to target critical Russian assets such as oil refineries, pipelines, and power plants. This strategic shift comes as the U.S. continues to consider the transfer of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine—weapons with a range sufficient to reach Moscow from Ukrainian territory.

A 'Sword with Eyes': A New Phase of Support

This new policy is seen as Washington's indirect but clear answer to a question previously posed by Russia: "If the U.S. provides Tomahawks to Ukraine, will it also provide intelligence on targets?"

While a final decision on the Tomahawk transfer has not been made, the public commitment to providing targeting intelligence for deep strikes inside Russia demonstrates a new level of political will. The move signals a strategic evolution from merely supplying weapons to actively helping Ukraine strike at the economic lifelines of Moscow's war machine.

In other words, Washington has sent a clear signal that its provision of long-range weapons will not be a case of "handing over a sword blindfolded." Instead, advanced weaponry will be accompanied by the operational support required to change the battlefield's dynamics.

Diplomatic Pressure and International Alignment

In addition to the intelligence support, the U.S. President is ramping up diplomatic pressure, urging European allies to completely stop purchasing Russian oil and increasing pressure on other major buyers like India and Turkey to do the same. The President has asserted that with sustained EU and U.S. support, Ukraine can and will regain all of its sovereign territory.

Aligning with this push, the G7 group of nations has also released a statement declaring it will take joint action to close loopholes that allow for the continued sale of Russian oil on global markets.

Russia's Defiant Reaction

Russia has publicly downplayed the potential impact of the move, with officials stating that the provision of Tomahawks "will not change the battlefield." However, in the same breath, they have acknowledged that energy revenue remains the "main lifeblood" of their war economy.

The decision by Washington marks a calculated escalation, deliberately targeting the foundation of Russia's ability to wage war. It demonstrates a commitment not just to helping Ukraine defend itself, but to actively enabling Kyiv to degrade the economic engine that fuels the conflict.
